In this guide
01 / More than a connection
Stay for a gentle arrival, not a checklist.
Kunming is useful when you want to recover from a journey, sort out your phone and payment setup, and enjoy a city day before moving west. Give it a night if your main goal is Dali and Lijiang. Give it two if you want a full city day, or add another if the Stone Forest is a priority.
If your arrival is late and the next train is early, choose a practical hotel and leave sightseeing out. A nominal “day in Kunming” can disappear once airport, hotel and station transfers are counted.
Kunming's tourism bureau has promoted separate Green Lake walking and Dianchi lakeside routes. That is a useful way to organize your visit: choose one area rather than treating the whole city as a single walk. The source describes a 2026 seasonal programme, not an ongoing event calendar. 02 / Pick a day
Green Lake, Dianchi or the Stone Forest?
Green Lake / 翠湖
Our first-arrival choice: an easy walk with room to stop, eat and head back when you have had enough. Pair it with nearby streets rather than a second distant attraction. A slow morning is a valid itinerary.
Best fit: an arrival afternoon or a relaxed city morning.
Dianchi / 滇池
Choose a named lakeside destination such as Haigeng Park rather than entering “Dianchi” as an imprecise pickup point. Make this the main outing of the day; keep transport back to your hotel in the plan.
Best fit: visitors who prefer open water and a longer outdoor block.
Stone Forest / 石林
Reserve a separate day if rock scenery is one of your reasons for coming to Yunnan. Work backwards from the return journey, and check the walking route, admission and local transport before deciding it fits.
Shilin is part of UNESCO's South China Karst property, recognized for its distinctive limestone formations. UNESCO site description ↗

Do not use a railway arrival at a station with “Shilin” in its name as proof that you have reached the scenic entrance. Confirm the actual station and the remaining transfer. Avoid putting a non-refundable evening departure immediately after a day trip with uncertain transport.
03 / Your base
Let the next connection decide the hotel.
| Area | Choose it for | The compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Green Lake / central city | A walkable city stay and flexible meals. | Still allow a separate airport or station transfer. |
| Near your booked railway station | An early departure or a short transit stay. | Check the exact station; “Kunming” and “Kunming South” are not interchangeable. |
| Airport area | A late arrival or early flight. | Ask whether the advertised shuttle operates at your actual time. |
| Dianchi area | A stay deliberately centered on the lake. | It may be inconvenient for a brief central-city visit followed by a train. |
Before booking, ask for the hotel's Chinese address, nearest practical transport stop, luggage storage and foreign-passport check-in arrangements. A room listing's distance to “city center” does not answer those questions.
04 / Arrival & departure
Three names to keep separate.
- Kunming Changshui International Airport
- 昆明长水国际机场
- Kunming railway station
- 昆明站
- Kunming South railway station
- 昆明南站
Copy the exact station from your ticket and check the full transfer in a current map app. Compare an operating metro connection with an official taxi or a pre-arranged vehicle for your arrival time, bags and party size. Do not rely on a timetable remembered from another trip.
Kunming is connected to the northwest Yunnan rail network, including the extension to Shangri-La. Search the actual date and station on Railway 12306; older opening-day journey times are not current schedules. Regional railway source ↗
For a first trip, we would continue to Dali before Lijiang. If your flights favor a different order, compare the whole route before buying the middle leg.
05 / An achievable first day
Keep the first afternoon close to the hotel.
- After arrival: check in or leave bags, confirm tomorrow's departure station, and test mobile data and a small everyday payment.
- Afternoon: take a Green Lake walk if it suits your base and energy. If the weather turns, shorten the walk rather than adding another transfer.
- Evening: eat near the hotel, save tomorrow's Chinese address and collect any breakfast or checkout details needed for an early start.
- With another full day: choose Dianchi or the Stone Forest. Do not assume both will fit comfortably before an onward train.
These are pacing suggestions, not fixed opening hours. Leave enough time for the journey you have actually booked.
06 / Small checks, easier days
What to prepare before heading west
- Weather: check Kunming separately from Dali, Lijiang and higher destinations. Carry a layer and rain protection even when your first afternoon is warm.
- Food: try a noodle meal if it suits your diet; explain allergies clearly and confirm ingredients. A dish's English name is not an ingredient list.
- Costs: distinguish a city walk from a paid excursion. For Stone Forest arrangements, ask about admission, local transfers, any internal transport and what happens if plans change.
- Phone: save station and hotel details offline. Use our navigation guide and translation preparation.
Before deciding how long to stay
Is one night enough?
It can work for an arrival and a short walk if your connection allows. It is not a full sightseeing day; add time if Kunming itself or the Stone Forest is a priority.
Should I stay near Kunming South?
Consider it if your booked train and departure time make that convenient. For a city visit, compare the complete hotel-to-sights and hotel-to-station journeys first.
Can I continue straight to Shaxi?
Plan the regional connection and the final road journey separately. For a first visit, an overnight in Dali usually gives the route more breathing room.
