Old town, lakeside or village?

Plan two or three nights for Dali Old Town, a section of Erhai and Xizhou. Choose your base first: a walkable old-town stay and a lakeside retreat create very different transfer needs.

01 / Choose your Dali

A lakeside photograph does not tell you where to sleep.

Dali can mean an old-town evening, a village morning, a long lakeside outing or a convenient night near onward transport. Those are different stays. Our first-visit choice is a practical base near the old town, then one day for Xizhou or a manageable section of Erhai.

Choose a lakeside hotel when spending time at the property is part of the trip. If you want to eat in the old town every evening, check the return journey before booking a room across the lake. With two nights, one substantial outing is usually more rewarding than a full circuit plus a mountain day.

02 / Make the days different

Old town, village and water.

Dali Old Town / 大理古城

Use your arrival afternoon to learn the streets around your accommodation and find the pickup point for tomorrow. Return for an evening walk rather than treating the old town as a single photo stop.

Dali's official scenic-site directory lists the old-town scenic area as open free of charge year-round. That does not include admission to separately ticketed attractions, performances or transport. Official directory ↗

Xizhou / 喜洲

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism's Dali route highlights Xizhou's Bai architecture, Yan family courtyard and local food traditions. Cultural route source ↗

Choose a village-centered outing: architecture, a meal and some time on foot. Fields change with the season; do not plan around a photograph's crop color. Keep to public paths and ask before photographing people or entering courtyards.

Erhai / 洱海

Pick a named section or village instead of trying to “do the lake.” Decide whether you want a walk, a café stop, a boat outing or a longer road journey. The vehicle and pickup arrangements depend on that choice. A full circuit is not essential to enjoying the water.

Cangshan / 苍山, or the Three Pagodas / 崇圣寺三塔

Consider one as an additional outing if you have a third day. For a mountain visit, confirm the exact cableway, current operations, weather and walking involved. For the Three Pagodas, check the attraction's current admission arrangements. Neither should be added simply because it is visible from town.

03 / Where to stay

Four bases, four trade-offs.

BaseBest fitBefore booking
Old-town edgeA first visit with restaurants and evening walks.Road access, overnight noise and the actual walk with bags.
West-side village / Xizhou areaA slower stay focused on village surroundings.Meal choices and transport after dark.
East lakeside / Shuanglang areaTime at a chosen lakeside property.Transfers to the old town, station and next destination.
Xiaguan / station-oriented stayA practical early departure or short transit.Whether the saving in transfer time fits your sightseeing plans.

Ask the property to mark its entrance and a car-accessible meeting point in Chinese. Confirm foreign-passport check-in and room heating or cooling as relevant to your dates. “Dali hotel” is too broad a description to book from.

04 / A realistic stay

Two full days, without circling everything.

  1. Arrival: transfer to your base, settle in and walk nearby. Keep any paid attraction optional.
  2. Full day 1: Xizhou and a selected west-side lakeside stop, with the return journey arranged. Leave time for lunch and a slower walk.
  3. Full day 2, if staying longer: choose Cangshan, the Three Pagodas or a longer lakeside day. Use the weather and your energy to choose, not an attraction count.
  4. Departure: go directly to the next destination. Do not hide a major sightseeing detour inside the transfer estimate.

Our suggestion is two or three nights, adjusted for arrival time. Two nights with a late arrival may give you only one proper sightseeing day.

05 / Getting in & moving on

Book the last part of the journey too.

When searching trains, distinguish 大理站 from 大理古城. Save your hotel's exact address and check the transfer from your booked arrival point. Use Railway 12306 for dated rail options, not a travel blog's historic timetable.

For Lijiang, compare the direct rail journey. For Shaxi, organize a road journey and a real overnight stop. Ask for a quote that specifies departure location, destination, passenger and bag count, stops and cancellation terms.

If you consider cycling or an electric vehicle, check local access rules, the vehicle's legal requirements and insurance before hiring. A scenic path is not automatically open to every type of vehicle. An ordinary walking plan is a good alternative.

06 / Weather & spending

Pay for the day you actually want.

The province's broad rainy-season window is May–October; it is context, not a forecast for Dali. Keep your outdoor day flexible and check local conditions. Climate context ↗

Compare hotel prices for the exact room and date. For outings, separate vehicle hire, admission, cableways or boats, meals and optional workshops. Ask whether a workshop price is per person and whether materials are included. Do not treat a low entry price as the total cost of the day.

A compact packing list: walking shoes, a light warm layer, rain protection, sun protection and your Chinese hotel address offline. For payments, prepare Alipay or WeChat Pay plus a backup.

Questions before choosing your base

Should I stay beside Erhai or in the old town?

Choose the old-town area for easier meals and evening walks. Choose a lakeside property when the stay itself is a priority and you accept the extra transfers.

Do I need to go all the way around the lake?

No. A chosen section with time to walk and eat is our preferred starting point for a short visit.

Is Shaxi a day trip from Dali?

We would compare an overnight stop on the way to Lijiang instead. If there is no room for that, decide whether the extra road time is worth losing a Dali day.

Sources & planning notes
