01 / Understand the place
“Lijiang Old Town” is not the whole decision.
UNESCO's World Heritage property includes Dayan Old Town, Baisha and Shuhe. It describes the townscape and its water system, with the Lijiang plain at about 2,400 meters. Those are distinct areas to plan around, not one hotel neighborhood. UNESCO description ↗
For a first visit, choose the place where you want to spend your evenings, then organize outings from there. Our default is two or three nights. A longer stay can separate town time from a mountain excursion and give the weather room to change.
If you dislike busy retail streets, do not judge the whole region from a brief visit to the busiest part of Dayan. Equally, a village label does not guarantee quiet: check the exact hotel surroundings and recent, room-specific information.
02 / Choose a base
Dayan, Shuhe or Baisha?
| Base | Choose it when | Watch the trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Dayan / 大研古城 | You want central evening walks and a wide choice of places to eat. | Check nighttime noise, stairs and how far bags must be carried from the road. |
| Shuhe / 束河古镇 | You want to make a different heritage area your base. | Going to Dayan becomes a separate journey rather than a casual walk out of the hotel. |
| Baisha / 白沙古镇 | A village-focused stay is more important than central convenience. | Verify meals, evening transport and the precise location of a property marketed as “Baisha.” |
| Road-accessible edge of an old town | Luggage, mobility or an early pickup matters most. | Ask for the actual pedestrian route into the area you want to explore. |
Send the hotel a simple message: “Where can a taxi stop? How far is the walk to the room, are there stairs, and is there music nearby at night?” Confirm foreign-passport check-in and heating for your dates.
03 / Explore with some space
A town day should have time to wander.
Dayan: follow a lane, not a shopping list
Begin with your hotel's access point and a recognizable meeting place. Walk a smaller area slowly, look at the channels and buildings, and stop for a meal. A morning and an evening visit can feel different without requiring another hotel move.

Shuhe or Baisha: choose one first
Give a second heritage area its own outing. Decide whether your priority is architecture, a specific museum or simply a different setting, and check any ticketed interior separately. Trying to visit every old town in one day can leave more time in vehicles than on foot.
Black Dragon Pool / 黑龙潭
Consider it if a park visit fits your interests and the day's weather. Confirm admission and access before setting out. The familiar snow-mountain reflection photographs depend on visibility and conditions; the view is not a guaranteed inclusion in a ticket.
04 / A separate mountain day
Know which outing you are buying.
“Jade Dragon Snow Mountain” can describe quite different combinations of transport, cableways, walking and other stops. Ask the seller or official attraction channel to name the exact route. A valley visit and a high cableway excursion should not be treated as equivalent.
- Access: exact attraction, entrance and cableway; date and identity-document requirements.
- Cost: admission, cableway, shuttle, vehicle, guide and any optional extras listed separately.
- Physical demand: elevations reached, walking and steps, rest options and a way to leave early.
- Changes: weather closures, cancellation terms and what is refunded if only part of the outing operates.
The CDC recommends gradual ascent and advises against traveling higher while altitude-illness symptoms persist. Discuss a high-elevation excursion with a clinician if your health or ascent schedule calls for it; an oxygen product is not proof that an itinerary is suitable. Altitude guidance ↗
Our planning choice is to leave a mountain visit off arrival day. If it does not suit you, a second town day is a complete alternative rather than a failed trip.
05 / Put the stay together
Build around one full day at a time.
- Arrival: reach the actual hotel meeting point, settle in and take a short walk around your base.
- First full day: explore Dayan and, if it fits, a nearby park or a specific interior you have checked.
- Second full day: choose Shuhe or Baisha, or a separately confirmed mountain outing. Keep an easier alternative.
- Departure: leave time to get from the room to the road and onward to the booked station or airport.
These are our pacing suggestions. With a late arrival and early departure, two nights leave only one full day; choose the highlight you care about most.
06 / Arriving & moving north
Station, old town and hotel are three different points.
Save 丽江站, your chosen old-town name and the full hotel address. For a flight, check 丽江三义国际机场 and your actual transfer. A city name on a ticket does not include the journey to a pedestrian lane.
From Dali, compare the dated train with the Shaxi road-stop route. They create different days and different costs.
The Lijiang–Shangri-La railway opened in 2023. Check current services on Railway 12306 before adding the Shangri-La extension. Opening announcement ↗
Do not add a gorge hike casually to a transfer. A hike needs its own route, current access, weather, fitness and exit planning; a roadside sightseeing stop does not validate a trekking itinerary.
Questions before booking
Should I change hotels between Dayan and Shuhe?
For a short stay, we would usually choose one base and visit the other. Change hotels only if the different setting is worth the packing and transfer.
Do I have to visit the snow mountain?
No. Heritage areas, local meals and a slower town stay can be the main trip. Make a mountain visit a deliberate choice with current access and altitude checks.
Will a courtyard hotel be quiet?
The building style alone cannot tell you. Ask about the room's position, sound insulation, nearby music and road access.
