The practical China guide / Language & everyday travel

English & translation apps in China.

A little preparation. An easier conversation.

You can plan a China trip without fluent Mandarin. Save confirmed Chinese place names, prepare offline translation and keep a few short phrases ready to show when words are not enough.

01Show the exact place

Keep the Chinese name, branch and full address.

02Ask one short question

Check names, dates and amounts separately.

03Test before departure

Download languages, then switch the connection off.

You do not need fluent Mandarin.
You need a way to finish the next task.

Prepare to show a destination, ask a short question and understand a simple reply. English assistance varies by venue and person, so do not make a station transfer or hotel arrival depend on finding an English speaker.

A Chinese place name from your actual booking is more useful than a confident translation of the wrong branch. Keep names, dates, prices and quantities visible; confirm them separately instead of burying them inside a long sentence.

Use this pattern:

Show the place or item → ask one short question → let the other person type → check the important name or number together.

Four phrases you can simply show.

These are everyday communication prompts. Pair them with the actual address, ticket or item. Copy the Chinese text into your notes, or save a screenshot.

Getting to your destination

请带我去这个地址。

Please take me to this address.

Finding the right entrance

请问,入口在哪里?

Excuse me, where is the entrance?

Checking a price

请问,一共多少钱?

How much is it in total, please?

When speech is not working

请打字给我看,谢谢。

Please type it so I can read it. Thank you.

For a station, show the name on your ticket. Beijing South, Beijing West and other stations are not interchangeable; keep the full name rather than simplifying it to “Beijing station.”

Download first. Test offline second.

Google Translate · Android

While connected, open the language selection and look for a download option next to the language you need. If the icon is absent, that language cannot be downloaded through that option. Download the relevant languages, then test text translation with Wi-Fi and mobile data off.

These are documented setup paths, not our mainland field tests. Text, voice, camera and live conversation are different features. Do not assume that one working offline proves the others do.

Try the exact task you will need

  1. Typed text: translate a short question and read the reply with the connection off.
  2. Camera: if you intend to use it, test it separately on your phone. Keep typed text as a fallback.
  3. Place names: save the hotel-confirmed Chinese name rather than relying on the app to invent one.

If the offline test fails, download the missing supported language or save the phrases you need before departure. Use the internet preparation guide for the separate data and account checks.

A hotel address card that survives a dead connection.

Ask your hotel or host to send the confirmed Chinese details. Save them together in a note or screenshot. This layout shows what to include; replace every field with your actual booking details.

Ask the hotel to check the final card. Do not substitute a similar-sounding hotel or another branch.

For transport, show the complete card. If a driver or staff member is unsure, use the confirmed hotel number to clarify the destination. See our taxi guide and map preparation guide.

Use a person when the consequences matter.

For medical decisions, legal documents, serious food allergies or a significant financial commitment, arrange appropriate language assistance. A fluent-looking translation is not proof that the meaning is correct.

For an appointment, ask the organization which language support is available, who provides it and whether there is a charge. Our healthcare language guide distinguishes help at registration, the clinical conversation and translated records.

For routine travel, shorter is usually easier to check: one request, one reply, one confirmation. If speech recognition struggles in a noisy station, switch to text rather than repeating a longer sentence.
